Welcome
Designer & expert Michelle Holik is passionate about sharing knowledge and also the realities of working as a surface pattern designer today, from the perspective of in-house designer, freelance and licensing - because she's done them all.
Hi, I'm Michelle Holik, an Australian textile & surface pattern designer. In my professional career, now spanning nearly 15 years, I have designed for bedding, homewares, interior & fashion fabrics, and more recently stationery. Brands I've worked with include Sheridan, My House, Pillowtalk, Target Australia, Kmart, Spotlight, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Walmart, TK Maxx, Lidl, Zara Home, and Bespoke Letterpress.
After leaving school at 15 years old to pursue a creative career path I studied pattern-making (for clothing) and fine arts, including sculpture and print making. Later I got into what I thought was my dream - fashion design, that is until I discovered textile design. I went on to complete a Bachelor of Art in Textile Design at RMIT in Melbourne, and before graduating from my degree began working in the homewares industry designing mattress ticking (patterns on mattresses!). And somewhere in there before discovering textiles I was also a nurse for a few years.
Having worked across multiple industries I always return to designing unique textiles for home and fashion, which is my biggest passion.
Now I'm also passionate about sharing my knowledge to help others discover the joy of designing for homewares! I hope you'll join me on this learning discovery.
